<p>Freelancers are <a title="Independence and freelance professionals" href="http://alltopstartups.com/2011/06/27/report-freelance-professionals-are-happier-with-their-independence/" target="_blank">independent</a> sorts, and yes, we should give ourselves credit for where we are and what we&#8217;ve accomplished.</p>
<p>But we didn&#8217;t get here in a vacuum. Folks along the way made a difference, sometimes a huge one.</p>

<h3>Winter reflections</h3>
<p>Over 50 cm of snow fell in a few hours. As my husband and I sipped steaming cups of hot chocolate to warm up at home while watching the snowflakes dance outside, we became contemplative, recalling fond memories of our many years together and farther back still, of those who&#8217;d made such a difference in our lives.</p>
<h3>Looking back</h3>
<p>While I tend to write forward-looking pieces on this blog, for once I&#8217;d like to look back for a minute. And to ask you to take a few minutes out of your hectic schedule to do the same. <a title="Positive effects of gratitude" href="http://www.sharpbrains.com/blog/2007/11/29/robert-emmons-on-the-positive-psychology-of-gratitude/" target="_blank">Gratitude</a> is empowering.</p>
<h3>To whom do you owe thanks?</h3>
<p>Beyond your family, your friends, your spouse or loved one, whose contribution can you look back on now and recognize made a marked difference in whom you are and what you are do today? <strong>No, you didn&#8217;t do it all by yourself.</strong></p>
<h3>Three gifts</h3>
<p>In sorting through all the wonderful people who have touched my life, three stand out for the enduring effects their role played.</p>
<p>M.K., my high school history and geography teacher, exuded unfailing passion for his work, respect for his students, and a will to encourage our individuality and talents. His <a title="Emotional intelligence" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emotional_intelligence" target="_blank">emotional intelligence</a> (I now know to call it that) was a refreshing contrast to the classic French educational style that stresses conformity and uses criticism as feedback. He helped us gain self-confidence, to learn by trying and letting go of fear of failure, to accept ourselves (probably the biggest challenge for teenagers!) and to choose a path we&#8217;d be passionate about.</p>
<p>R.S, my college and grad school political science professor, who expunged the last bits of French influence from my writing in English. He must have spent hours correcting each of our term papers: the pristine white sheets with black type we&#8217;d hand in &#8211; yes, this was in the olden days of typewriters and R.S. loathed Correcto-Type &#8211; would come back covered with his tight red scrawl. I spent hours studying the corrections and remarks he made on mine over the years. I anguished over each sentence I&#8217;d write for the next one. I&#8217;d alternate between praising his clear commitment to scholarship and <em><strong>Clear English Writing</strong></em> and cursing him, bent over my manual <a title="Smith Corona Galaxie Twelve" href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/78621393/vintage-smith-corona-typewriter-1970s" target="_blank">Smith Corona</a>, for making me a stressed-out wreck with very sore fingertips. With a computer, I still angst, but my fingers are fine.</p>
<p>And finally G.C., who was instrumental in launching my freelance business by bringing me in on a year-long project for a complex tripartite merger. His trust, confidence and support, as well as his generous insights to navigate sometimes turbulent political waters, contributed immensely to the project&#8217;s success &#8211; and to my confidence in building my business.</p>
<h3>Do it before it&#8217;s too late</h3>
<p>Pick up the phone. Send a note. Tell those precious people in your life what difference they made. They probably don&#8217;t know. <em>Wouldn&#8217;t you like to know if something about you or something you passed on to another did?</em></p>
<p>Do it <strong><em>now</em></strong>, before it&#8217;s too late.</p>
<p>I learned a few years ago M.K and R.S had passed away. I&#8217;d lost touch with them, put off looking them up, <em>I&#8217;d do it when I had time</em>. I deeply regret my laziness.</p>

<p>Avec Buffer, je peux programmer mes Tweets en avance (Buffer n&#8217;est pas seul à proposer cela, mais il le fait très bien et avec une grande souplesse.)</p>
<p>Je peux partager facilement une info ou un article trouvé n&#8217;importe où sur le Net sans avoir à quitter la page où je me trouve pour passer sur HootSuite, Twitter ou une autre interface (me connecter, faire un copié-collé et tutti quanti &#8211; l&#8217;usine à gaz habituelle). Et il s&#8217;intègre parfaitement sur mon mobile Android. </p>
<h3>Prism</h3>

<p>Perso, je ne compte plus le nombre de fois où, en fin de journée, mes applis Web ralentissent, car ayant trop de fenêtres ouvertes, le cache de Firefox est saturé. Vous connaissez sûrement le problème : vous êtes en train d&#8217;écrire un Tweet, un billet de blog, ou de lire quelque chose de passionnant, et vlan ! Ca plante, vous perdez votre travail et devez relancer le navigateur &#8211; ou pire, rebooter votre bécane. Que de temps perdu pour des prunes !</p>
<p>Avec Prism, j&#8217;ai créé des <strong>applications indépendantes</strong> pour Hootsuite et ce blog (où je suis en train d&#8217;écrire sans avoir Firefox ouvert !). Je travaille en toute tranquillité et sans avoir à passer d&#8217;un onglet à un autre (je confesse, mon écran d&#8217;ordit ressemble à mon bureau <img src='http://interculturalzone.lokahi-interactive.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' />  ).</p>
<h3>My Work Clock</h3>

<p>Sur PC, j&#8217;utilise <a title="Time Stamp" href="http://www.syntap.com/products_timestamp.htm" target="_blank">Time Stamp</a> depuis des années et en suis très contente, mais à ma connaissance il n&#8217;existe pas encore de version pour mobiles.</p>
<p>Or, comme pour vous, mon téléphone portable joue un rôle de plus en plus important dans la gestion de mon activité avec la <strong>convergence</strong> des outils de production et de partage de contenus que ce soit avec mes réseaux ou mes clients. Pouvoir suivre l&#8217;utilisation de mon temps quand je quitte ma chère bécane était un réel besoin auquel cette appli répond bien.</p>
<h3>Vlingo</h3>
<p><a href="%20http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ3434yBWTAVDzahDvUNt8J2Bz7XGyBfykZlQrReKjE4Rpmvsth%20" target="_blank"><img class="alignleft" title="Vlingo" src="http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ3434yBWTAVDzahDvUNt8J2Bz7XGyBfykZlQrReKjE4Rpmvsth" alt="Vlingo" width="79" height="79" /></a> Quel professionnel indépendant n&#8217;a pas rêvé d&#8217;avoir une assistante virtuelle ? <a title="Vlingo" href="http://www.vlingo.com/" target="_blank">Vlingo</a> est un pas dans la bonne direction !</p>
<p>N&#8217;étant pas du tout du tout douée à taper sur un téléphone mobile (mon ancien, un Nokia E71, avait un vrai clavier; mon nouveau, un Galaxy S2, a un écran tactile), je perds un temps fou à rédiger textos, Tweets, courriels, notes, penses-bêtes et recherches sur Internet.</p>
<p>Maintenant, je n&#8217;ai qu&#8217;à dire à <strong>Vlingo</strong> <em>(faudrait que je trouve un nom à mon assistante virtuelle &#8211; vos idées sont les bienvenues)</em> ce que je veux faire.  Grâce à cette technologie vocale de pointe, je donne un ordre à Vlingo (&#8220;Appelle Alphone sur son portable&#8221;, &#8220;Texto Tintin je suis en retard&#8221;, &#8220;Recherche Google météo Honolulu&#8221;&#8230;) et hop ! Ma demande est exécutée.</p>
<p>Vlingo va être racheté par <a title="Nuance France" href="http://www.nuance.fr" target="_blank">Nuance</a>, l&#8217;éditeur de Dragon, qui se passe d&#8217;introduction, gage de qualité de l&#8217;appli et ses évolutions futures.</p>

<h2>Keepers and goners in 2012</h2>
<p>For independent professionals, time is probably the most valuable commodity.</p>
<p>We strive to save it &#8211; by becoming more efficient and productive. We aim to invest it wisely &#8211; by targeting our social media marcomm efforts well and being active in the right professional organizations. And we aim to find balance between our professional and personal time. </p>
<h3>Less is more</h3>
<p>As an increasing number of social media and professional networks compete for our attention and participation, freelancers face a tough choice: to participate lightly in many or in a more committed fashion in a few? The answer depends, in part, on your goals.</p>
<p>For me, social media and professional networks are a vehicle through which to engage with and ultimately meet others in person. Developing relationships takes time, commitment and regularity and I plan to focus my efforts better in 2012.</p>
<h3>Keepers</h3>
<h3><a title="Twitter" href="http://www.twitter.com/lokahiandquill" target="_blank">Twitter</a></h3>
<p>Twitter is a fabulous information resource. Thanks to fellow Tweeps, I&#8217;ve discovered terrific blogs to follow, gotten answers to questions in a jiffy, and enjoyed many conversations with colleagues through the workday. Better still is having had the chance to meet followers and colleagues in the flesh, especially during the <em>Journée mondiale de la traduction</em> last December (#JMT2011).</p>
<h3><a title="LinkedIn" href="http://fr.linkedin.com/in/patricialane" target="_blank">LinkedIn</a></h3>
<p>As member number 304,812 I joined LinkedIn before it even had 1 million members, but didn&#8217;t start really making use of it until about two years ago. As of November 2011, it has over 135 million members, with about 3 million in France, making it a much more useful tool in my target market.</p>
<h3><a title="Société française des traducteurs" href="http://sft.fr" target="_blank">Société française des traducteurs</a></h3>
<p>Choosing to remain an active member of France&#8217;s union of professional translators is a no-brainer! Collegiality, a lively private discussion list, a rich CPD offering and local events, in addition to group insurance plans, combine to make this membership a worthwhile investment all around.</p>
<h3><a title="Communication et Entreprise" href="http://www.communicationetentreprise.com" target="_blank">Communication et Entreprise</a></h3>
<p>Another keeper! The oldest association of professional communicators in France gathers corporates, public institutions, communication agencies and independent professionals. It hosts regular workshops and round tables, publishes a quarterly magazine (for which I&#8217;ve been interviewed twice!), spearheads issue-oriented projects (such as the <em>Guide de la relation Indépendant &#8211; Entreprise/Agence</em>), and offers a solid and diverse <a title="Formations et formateurs" href="http://www.communicationetentreprise.com/formations-carriere/formations/les-formateurs.html" target="_blank">CPD programme</a> in which I&#8217;ll be instructor as well as student this year.</p>
<h3>Goners</h3>
<h3><a title="Viadeo" href="http://www.viadeo.com/fr/profile/patricia.lane" target="_blank">Viadeo</a></h3>
<p>I&#8217;ve been a premium member of Viadeo for the past two years (because you can hardly do anything on that network otherwise), but I shall not be renewing it, cheap as it may be. I find it cumbersome to navigate and too filled with service and product offer broadcasts. I don&#8217;t find it an appealing space in which to spend time and contribute. I&#8217;ll keep my profile alive but won&#8217;t rely on Viadeo in my networking or business development endeavors.</p>
<p><a title="IABC" href="http://www.iabc.com" target="_blank">IABC</a></p>
<p>I joined IABC (the International Association of Business Communicators) last summer, seduced by its information and resource-filled website and incredibly rich live and remote conferences and courses. I&#8217;ve read its quarterly magazine from cover to cover and shall probably order some of its publications before my membership runs out.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a great organization, so why am I not renewing my membership? Because all that drew me in is tough to afford for an independent professional. Every single conference, workshop or course (even remotely delivered) I&#8217;ve been interested in signing up for had a price tag above $1,000. Even one-hour webinars cost around $100 for members. It is an organization that seems to cater to large corporates and their managers, not SMB or independent professionals. And that&#8217;s a pity. They could, as Communication &amp; Entreprise does, apply rate scales depending on the size of the member organization, allowing for a fruitful mix of all players in the corporate communications professions.</p>
<p><strong>Klout</strong></p>
<p>After reading Pam Moore&#8217;s blog article <a title="Deleted my Klout profile" href="http://www.pammarketingnut.com/2011/11/why-i-deleted-my-klout-profile/#" target="_blank">Why I deleted my Klout profile</a>, I went ahead and did so as well. I&#8217;m not on Facebook for a plethora of privacy and copyright issues, and Pam&#8217;s article explained well the similar drawbacks with Klout.  Thanks Pam!</p>
<p><strong>Explorations</strong></p>
<p>I signed up for Google+ when it came out in beta, but haven&#8217;t taken the time yet to learn to use it properly. I&#8217;ll play with it before making a decision. Advice and how-to&#8217;s most welcome!</p>
<h3>Your choices and recommendations?</h3>
<p>Where will you invest your precious time in 2012? Do you take a &#8220;sprinkle approach&#8221; or a concentrated one and why? What networks and organizations have you found worthwhile and would recommend to others?</p>

<h2>Vos donneurs d&#8217;ordre, <br />pas leur employeur</h2>
<h3>Une découverte inattendue</h3>
<p>En travaillant sur mon bilan de fin d&#8217;année et mon <em><a title="Connection between marketing and rates" href="http://interculturalzone.lokahi-interactive.com/2011/09/20/the-connection-between-marketing-and-hourly-rates/" target="_blank">marketing backlog</a> </em>pour le premier trimestre de 2012, j&#8217;ai fait une découverte inattendue. </p>
<h3>La surprise du bilan</h3>
<p>Alors qu&#8217;auparavant, mes clients (les humains, pas les structures !) se ventilaient dans des proportions en cohérence avec les ratios hommes et femmes CSP+ en entreprise, soit environ 60/40 à la louche, cette année, les décideurs furent à majorité écrasante <strong><em>des décideuses.</em></strong></p>
<p>Et &#8211; la surprise continue &#8211; 75 % des conversations en cours avec des prospects pour des projets en 2012 ont lieu avec des <strong>femmes.</strong></p>
<h3>Et alors ? Quelle différence ?</h3>
<p>Peu m&#8217;importe que mon donneur d&#8217;ordre soit une donneuse d&#8217;ordre ou non. La qualité du professionnalisme, l&#8217;harmonie de l&#8217;échange, et l&#8217;intérêt du projet priment.</p>
<p>Et ici, le but n&#8217;est pas de dresser une étude scientifique sur les questions de parité, de plafond de verre, ou de la <a title="Accès et représentation des femmes dans les organes de gouvernance d'entreprise" href="http://http://www.orse.org/site2/maj/phototheque/photos/actualite/etudeifa_orse_epwn_.pdf" target="_blank">sous-représentation des femmes</a> aux conseils d&#8217;administration des grandes entreprises. Les ressources ne manquent pas.</p>
<p>Je suis dans le ressenti pur, une petite exploration &#8220;bilanesque&#8221; de ce que j&#8217;ai pu constater de ces collaborations soutenues sur des projets de longue haleine. Et oui, les différences existent bel et bien.</p>
<p>Je vous les livre brut de décoffrage.</p>
<h3>Des frontières moins étanches</h3>
<p>Les freelances, à la différence de salariés, n&#8217;apprennent pas à connaître leurs clients (ou en savoir plus sur eux) en papotant autour de la machine à café du bureau. Idem, vos clients <em>(à moins qu&#8217;ils appellent *pile* quand le chien aboie, le gamin pleure ou vous venez de terminer un déjeuner tardif devant votre ordinateur !)</em> généralement ne savent pas grand-chose sur votre vie privée. Après tout, vous êtes pro jusqu&#8217;au bout des ongles !</p>
<p>Je constate qu&#8217;avec des donneuses d&#8217;ordre, vie professionnelle et vie personnelle ne représentent pas des zones imperméables et distinctes séparées par une frontière quasi hermétique.</p>
<p>Au fil du temps, cliente et prestataire se découvrent par petites bribes ici et là, ce qui permet d&#8217;avoir une compréhension plus globale de l&#8217;autre, de son contexte, de ses contraintes et de son <strong>fonctionnement humain</strong> dans sa globalité.</p>
<p>Les <strong>talents</strong> dont les femmes doivent faire preuve pour <strong>gérer de front des doubles vies complexes</strong> (organisation, souplesse, prévoyance, négociation) se retrouvent souvent dans la manière de mener leurs équipes (internes et externes). Autant cela peut donner lieu à une compréhension plus tolérante si nous, prestataires, avons à faire face à un gros imprévu, autant cela peut également faire appel de notre part à une <strong>flexibilité</strong> et une <strong>adaptabilité</strong> hors de coutume. <span style="font-size: x-small;"><em>Oui, ok, je laisse le portable allumé, des textos à minuit, pas de problème. Si je suis dispo pour une réunion imprévue dans une heure ? Coup de bol, je peux me libérer, mais j&#8217;arrive &#8220;en l&#8217;état&#8221;</em> <em>!</em></span> <span style="font-size: x-small;"><em>Aller à Perpette les Oauilles tel jour ? Sorry, impossible, mais une visioconférence, ça vous va ?</em></span></p>
<h3>Des impératifs de faire (et refaire) ses preuves</h3>
<p>C&#8217;est une litote de souligner qu&#8217;une femme aux derniers échelons de la <a title="Couple prospect-prestataire : décryptez-vous efficacement" href="http://interculturalzone.lokahi-interactive.com/2010/11/24/le-couple-prospect-prestataire-decriptez-vous-efficacement/" target="_blank">pyramide managériale</a> doit souvent travailler plus dur que son homologue masculin et faire et refaire ses <strong>preuves.</strong> </p>
<p>Le besoin est double.</p>
<p>Nous, femmes, nous l&#8217;imposons souvent à nous-mêmes (par volonté de réussir, d&#8217;inspirer une autre forme de leadership, par une certaine insécurité aussi parfois). De plus, le monde hyperconcurrentiel dans lequel nous travaillons exige souvent d&#8217;une femme un autre comportement pour imposer ses idées et décisions que ce qui est attendu des hommes. Si l&#8217;un s&#8217;affirme, l&#8217;autre risque l&#8217;étiquette d&#8217;agressive, par exemple.</p>
<p><cite><strong>&#8220;Le référentiel culturel du management est masculin,&#8221;</strong> souligne <a title="Le management mise sur le féminin" href="http://www.psychologies.com/Moi/Travail/Relations-professionnelles/Articles-et-Dossiers/Le-management-mise-sur-le-feminin" target="_blank">Pierre Blanc-Sahnoun</a>.<br /></cite></p>
<p>Résultat des courses ? Gagner la <strong>confiance</strong> de votre donneuse d&#8217;ordre &#8211; et la construire sur la durée &#8211; est d&#8217;autant plus critique. Ceci, et la <strong>loyauté mutuelle</strong> qui en découle, sont les bases primordiales d&#8217;une collaboration réussie. Et vous, prestataires, aurez vous aussi à faire et refaire vos preuves pour valider aux yeux de tiers qu&#8217;en travaillant avec vous, <em>votre cliente a fait le bon choix.</em></p>
<h3>Management au féminin</h3>
<p>Management par la collaboration v. management par le dirigisme.</p>
<p>Le management au féminin (dont les hommes peuvent aussi faire preuve, et cela devient plus fréquent dans les plus jeunes générations, heureusement !) est plus axé sur la <strong>collaboration</strong>, la participation, le <strong>partage</strong> des informations, le <strong>consensus</strong> et la <strong>reconnaissance</strong> de chacun.</p>
<p>En tant que prestataire, j&#8217;ai bien ressenti cette différence auprès de mes donneuses d&#8217;ordre : communication ouverte et <strong>transparente</strong> qui permet d&#8217;avoir une compréhension bien plus large des enjeux, objectifs, et personnalités impliquées; mise en contexte global de tout projet;  <strong>franchise</strong> sur les obstacles, contraintes ou risques; <strong>liberté</strong> de poser des questions, même délicates, et d&#8217;exprimer des prises de position franches; <strong>intégration</strong> en tant que membre de l&#8217;équipe &#8211; même à distance; prises de décisions collectives plus qu&#8217;imposées; et reconnaissance des compétences et du rôle de chacun.</p>
<p>C&#8217;est agréable, cela demande <em>une plus grande et plus personnelle implication du prestataire externe</em> que le schéma plus classique d&#8217;être missionné pour fournir un travail et un résultat en tant que ressource externe (largement déconnectée) de la vie de l&#8217;entreprise.</p>
<p>Et j&#8217;aime ça ! <strong>Hybride</strong> peut-être optimal entre l&#8217;indépendance et l&#8217;autonomie de<strong> l&#8217;entrepreneuriat</strong> et la satisfaction plus humaine du <strong>travail en équipe</strong> dont on fait partie (sans les désavantages du salariat !)</p>
<p><span style="color: #8c260c;"><em>Qui étaient vos clients cette année ? Le profil a-t-il évolué ? Quel mode de collaboration préférez-vous ? A quoi pourrait ressembler votre année 2012 ?</em></span></p>

<p>Mais même les emplois hautement qualifiés &#8211; avocats, comptables, médecins, journalistes, traducteurs, ou autres CSP+ ne sont pas à l&#8217;abri de devenir superflus avec la mondialisation et la révolution des NTIC.</p>
<p>Tout dépend de la manière dont vous faites votre travail.</p>
<h3>Créateurs et serviteurs</h3>
<p>Nous appartenons tous à l&#8217;une ou l&#8217;autre de ces catégories.</p>
<p>Les créateurs sont ceux qui innovent, apportent une réelle valeur ajoutée et génèrent des gains de productivité.</p>
<p>Les serviteurs viennent en appui des créateurs et autres serviteurs en fournissant les ressources et services (que ce soient des logements, du conseil juridique ou des services administratifs par exemple), et bon nombre d&#8217;entre eux seront remplacés par des outils ou machines ou deviendront obsolètes au fur et à mesure que la manière de vivre et travailler changera.</p>
<h3>Dichotomie fondamentale entre créateurs et serviteurs</h3>
<p>Pour autant, les créateurs ne sont pas à l&#8217;abri d&#8217;être marginalisés.</p>
<p>A l&#8217;avenir, les deux profils &#8211; créateurs et serviteurs &#8211; auront à répondre au quotidien à une question fondamentale que posent les auteurs :</p>
<p><cite>Suis-je en train d&#8217;apporter une valeur ajoutée en offrant quelque chose d&#8217;unique et d&#8217;irremplaçable ? Est-ce que je rajoute un nappage de chocolat, de la crème fouettée et une cerise sur le gâteau dans tout ce que je fais ? <span style="font-size: x-small;">(ma traduction) </span></cite></p>
<p><strong>A la clé, la capacité d&#8217;effectuer tout travail non routinier <em>de manière non routinière.</em></strong></p>
<h3>Créateurs créatifs et serviteurs créatifs</h3>
<p>Tôt ou tard, si vous êtes un créateur routinier, vous risquez d&#8217;être remplacés. Dur à dire, mais vrai.</p>
<p>Les auteurs citent en exemple des montagnes de <a title="Armies of expensive lawyers replaced by software" href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/05/science/05legal.html?pagewanted=all" target="_blank">documents juridiques analysés par ordinateur </a>lors de la préparation de procès, travail habituellement effectué par des armées d&#8217;avocats à des coûts mirobolants.</p>
<p>D&#8217;autres avancées <em>(pas toujours heureuses, nous sommes d&#8217;accord, mais il faut être lucide)</em> viennent à l&#8217;esprit, telles l&#8217;analyse de radios médicales par ordinateur, la <a title="Workshop 1: Perspective for translation professions" href="http://ec.europa.eu/dgs/translation/programmes/languageindustry/platform/documents/translator_profile_conclusions_en.pdf" target="_blank">traduction</a> et l&#8217;interprétation automatiques ou la <a title="Journalisme assisté par ordinateur, en anglais" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Database_journalism" target="_blank">rédaction assistée par ordinateur</a> &#8211; ces derniers touchant à nos métiers de communicants, <strong>aïe</strong> !</p>
<p>Idem pour les serviteurs qui, pour maintenir leurs salaires et niveaux de vie, auront à réinventer leur travail ou l&#8217;effectuer avec une passion hors du commun ou une touche résolument personnelle.</p>
<h3>Parlons de nous, les communicants !</h3>
<p>La notion de valeur ajoutée (sa définition et promotion), à ce jour, est la clé d&#8217;un positionnement différenciant, de projets valorisants et de tarifs satisfaisants. Pour parler « cash », c&#8217;est ce qui distingue un prestataire lambda &#8211; qui fait un travail correct, à des tarifs moyens, mais sans distinction particulière quant à son expertise, ses méthodes de travail ou sa qualité de service au client &#8211; de celui qui est à la pointe de son métier et sait le valoriser &#8211; à son profit et celui de ses clients.</p>
<p>(Et comme dans le commerce, c&#8217;est ce moyen de gamme qui est le plus touché lors de crises économiques ou de changements fondamentaux dans les modes de travail. Le bas de gamme tire son épingle du jeu en misant sur le volume produit de manière standardisée à bas coût et le haut de gamme par son positionnement luxe, exclusif et à la qualité irréprochable.)</p>
<p>Demain, pour rester dans la course, il ne suffira plus d&#8217;être des créateurs ou serviteurs qui exercent leurs métiers non routiniers de manière routinière. <strong>Il faudra redoubler d&#8217;effort pour être des créateurs créatifs ou des serviteurs créatifs. </strong></p>
<p>Comme le soulignent Friedman et Mandelbaum :</p>
<p><cite>Une économie en bonne santé n&#8217;est pas uniquement propulsée par des gains d&#8217;efficacité et de productivité, mais aussi par l&#8217;innovation. C&#8217;est-à-dire grâce à des individus qui inventent des produits et services qui rendent d&#8217;autres plus confortables, plus productifs, plus éduqués, les divertissent, améliorent leur santé et leur sécurité. <span style="font-size: x-small;">(ma traduction)</span></cite></p>
<h3>Faisons un brainstorming ensemble</h3>
<p>Lors de la conférence d&#8217;<a title="Ideas on Stage 2011 conference" href="http://ideasonstage.com/pzios2011-iosc/" target="_blank">Ideas on Stage</a> mardi dernier, Clément Cazalot, fondateur de <a title="docTrackr" href="http://www.doctrackr.com/" target="_blank">docTrackr.com</a>, a défini le <span style="text-decoration: underline;">processus d&#8217;innovation d&#8217;une manière géniale.</span> Il conseille de <strong>&#8220;tomber amoureux du problème et non pas de sa solution.&#8221;</strong></p>
<p>D&#8217;autres experts (consultants, coach, chasseurs de têtes, et j&#8217;en passe) soulignent l&#8217;importance capitale de communiquer la <strong>passion</strong> de son métier pour résonner auprès de clients, prospects, auditoires et employeurs et décrocher la timbale.</p>
<p>Que pouvez-vous faire pour &#8220;tomber amoureux des problèmes de vos clients&#8221; (pour les résoudre) et pour transmettre une passion enivrante ?</p>
<p>Perso, je cogite et ai déjà quelques idées à peaufiner. Mais je vous laisse la primeur de lancer cette tempête céphalique collective pour ne pas l&#8217;orienter d&#8217;office. <p>There is an advantage in having been away so long from the city in which I grew up and lived nearly 30 years. Its myriad changes leaped out at me and I tuned into its tempo, energy and spirit 5/5.</p>
<h3>A seminally rough decade</h3>
<p>Between 9/11 and the 2008 Lehman Brothers&#8217; debacle that was the opening act to the continuing global crisis, New York and New Yorkers could have been forgiven for sliding into anxiety and depressive paralysis. A state whose instinctive élan would have been preserving what was left by all means possible not to lose anything more. </p>
<p><em>But that&#8217;s the antithesis of this city&#8217;s values, beliefs and relationship to time.</em></p>
<h3>Future-oriented, a &#8216;towards&#8217; motivation, a tolerance for risk and the courage to try</h3>
<p>That, to me, sums up the essence of New York&#8217;s kick-ass, never say die, creative, generous and entrepreneurial spirit and <strong>energy</strong>. The city&#8217;s renewal and residents&#8217; palpable positivism leap out in the 500+ images I took during my trip. I hope you enjoy the slide-show at the end of this post.</p>
<h3>Contrast with Paris and France</h3>
<p>I&#8217;ll admit to feeling frustrated at times with some of my native culture&#8217;s fundamental tenets. I&#8217;m French, yet growing up in New York has influenced me in many ways. I&#8217;m lucky (most of the time) in being able to draw on what I like best from each culture to &#8220;make my own soup&#8221;. But trying to influence some aspects of French culture or values is like tilting at windmills!<br /><strong></strong></p>
<p><em>Backward-looking, an &#8216;away from&#8217; motivation, a certain intolerance for risk and the reluctance to try (as failure is frowned upon here) is how I&#8217;d characterize some fundamental principles of French culture.</em></p>
<p><span style="color: #993300;"><em>Ne vous mettez pas la rate au court-bouillon !</em></span></p>
<p>Whether the issue is the Grand Paris, modern architecture in cities, any (usually tepid and timid) economic reform, simplification of our incredibly complex labor laws, or &#8211; gasp! &#8211; the mere hint of questioning special interest social entitlements, the gut reflex is to preserve what we have at all costs.</p>
<p>That incredible <strong>fear of loss or of change</strong> of any sort sends throngs in the streets to protest until enough nationwide paralysis forces the government to back-pedal. <em>I&#8217;m hardly exaggerating. </em>The fundamental reflex is to figure out a way to <em>preserve what we have individually</em>, rather than <em>joining together with courage and creativity</em> to see how we can overcome today&#8217;s severe crises for the greater good. Americans favor individualism, French are individualistic &#8211; nuance.<em><br /></em></p>
<h3>Acting rather than reacting</h3>
<p>These letters to the Editor of the <a title="Retired woman donates money to help solve the debt criis" href="http://http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/09/30/ED7E1LAOKG.DTL" target="_blank">San Francisco Chronicle</a> really hit home. A retired woman with modest means sent $500 to the Treasury to help with the debt crisis. She remarks:</p>
<p><cite>If we act together to donate, we could change America together. Let&#8217;s do it! </cite></p>
<p>Another chap decided he&#8217;d help by supporting the US Postal Service:</p>
<p><cite>I am going to hand-write, in my best writing, and send 23 personal letters to 23 friends &#8211; that&#8217;s only $10. If every taxpayer did this, that would amount to $1.4 billion that would go toward keeping a valuable service open.</cite></p>
<p>These stories, and other example of civic behavior, even made it to the French (independent) press at <a title="Aux US, ce sont les pauvres qui donnent pour réduire la dette" href="http://www.rue89.com/rue89-eco/2011/11/10/aux-etats-unis-ce-sont-les-pauvres-qui-donnent-pour-reduire-la-dette-226322" target="_blank">Rue89</a>. They won&#8217;t solve the US debt crisis, but they are illustrative of what a country can accomplish, even during the most arduous times, when citizens share a civic spirit and band together.</p>
<h3>My wish</h3>
<p>If France could be just <em>a little more</em> forward-looking &#8211; which does not mean giving up a shred of its love of history;</p>
<p>If France could be just <em>a little bit more</em> confident, have a vision and inspire citizens to get there;</p>
<p>If France could grasp that <em>struggling to to preserve</em> every shred of our advantages (the world envies us) might just mean <em>we&#8217;ll lose more</em> of what makes this country different;</p>
<p>If France could recognize <em>failure can be the best teacher</em> and stop tossing by the wayside as losers those who&#8217;ve had the guts to try;</p>
<p>Then maybe we could be in a better position to ride the current storms and come out on the other side united and motivated.</p>
<h3>In 5 or 10 years</h3>
<p>Both France and the US are in trouble, let&#8217;s not playing ostrich. But as I read (and recommend) <a title="That Used to Be Us" href="http://www.amazon.fr/That-Used-Be-Us-Invented/dp/0374288909" target="_blank"><em>That Used to Be Us</em></a>, by Thomas Friedman and Michael Mandelbaum, and no matter the gloomy picture they paint, I feel the US has the ability to take the sharp curve necessary to get back on track. It requires a combination of inspired (and courageous) leadership and civic spirit. Neither country at this time, sadly, has the former. If New York and these two Californians are any indication, at least the US has the latter.</p>

<h3>Pitching a client</h3>
<p><cite class="alignleft" lang="English" dir="ltr">Don&#8217;t pitch a strategy to a client without having sold your time to do the research.</cite></p>

<p>The golden circle of why, how and what starts with &#8220;why&#8221;. You can&#8217;t define a worthwhile strategy without answering the &#8220;why&#8221; question first, and that takes research, lots of it, on variables such as culture, people, context and category.</p>
<p>Do the research, get paid for it, design the strategy and get the client to sign off on it *before* rolling out your marketing campaign.</p>
<h3>What are you selling?</h3>
<p><cite>People don&#8217;t buy <strong>what</strong> you do, they buy <strong>why</strong> you do it.</cite></p>
<p>Successful marketing is emotional. You need to resonate with your target audience. I&#8217;ve spoken about this often on this blog, such as <a href="http://interculturalzone.lokahi-interactive.com/2010/12/08/presentation-zen-in-paris-10-top-take-aways/">here</a> and <a href="http://interculturalzone.lokahi-interactive.com/2010/11/15/transcreation-adaptation-are-not-just-for-marketing-and-advertising/">here</a>.</p>
<p><cite><em>Do business with people who believe what you believe.</em></cite></p>
<p>Choose clients, colleagues and team members who share your values and with whom there is an easy and comfortable dynamic with which to foster creative ideas.</p>
<h3>Not 3 but 7 Ps</h3>
<p>You&#8217;ve heard of marketing&#8217;s 3 Ps: product, price and positioning.</p>
<p>The 7 Ps are a golden rule to remember before launching a new project:</p>

<p><span><a title="Communication et entreprise" href="http://www.communicationetentreprise.com/" target="_blank">Communication et Entreprise</a>, the oldest association of professional communicators in France, has asked me to run a workshop for French communicators who need to present or to pitch in English to international clients.</span></p>
<h3>Core expertise</h3>
<p><span>I&#8217;ve run these types of workshops before, for big companies such as <a title="Airbus" href="http://www.airbus.com" target="_blank">Airbus</a> or <a title="Sanofi-Aventis" href="http://www.sanofi.com" target="_blank">Sanofi-Aventis</a>, to boutique firms like <a title="Infinancials" href="http://www.infinancials.com" target="_blank">Infinancials</a>. It is also part of the work I am doing with the <a title="Coaching de dirigeants" href="http://www.francoamericanquill.fr/pres-bourgogne-franche-comte.html" target="_blank">PRES Bourgogne Franche-Comté</a>. </span></p>
<p><span>So I have a great deal of material to choose from to design the seminar, but need to adapt the pedagogy from a two to three-day format to a <em>one-day session</em>. You&#8217;ve got it: that will probably be the biggest challenge.</span></p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been playing with a neat (free) <a title="Freemind" href="http://freemind.en.softonic.com/" target="_blank">mind-mapping tool</a> to let my creativity distill the main points I wish to convey in a <strong>resonating</strong> and participative &#8211; and quick! &#8211; way and make them <strong>stick</strong>.</p>
<h3>Tell me a story</h3>
<p>This is where you, dear readers, come in. <strong>Storytelling</strong> stands out as the best technique I can use to boost these participants&#8217; learning curve in one short day. I have stories, but need <em>more</em>.</p>
<p>You are all communicators and have experience &#8211; as clients or service providers &#8211; observing how different cultures communicate and are perceived.</p>
<p>What I would love to collect from you are sharp nuggets, vignettes or short stories on presentations you&#8217;ve seen delivered by French communicators in English.</p>
<ul>
<li>How do they differ from those of a native English speaker or other nationality?</li>
<li>What did you like? What worked? What did you dislike? What didn&#8217;t work?</li>
<li>What surprised you (the &#8220;huh?&#8221; factor)?</li>
<li>How did they build a rapport with you? How did they build trust?</li>
<li>How do they organize information? Did you follow naturally or were you lost?</li>
<li>Did they convince you and if not, what could they have done differently to do so?</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Feel free to go wide here:</strong> successful communications are a complex mix of verbal, vocal and non-verbal and culture-specific attributes. If your stories are funny, all the better &#8211; laughter is a terrific pedagogical tool!</p>

<p>This according to Ed Gandia&#8217;s 2011 <a title="Freelance Industry Report" href="http://www.internationalfreelancersday.com/2011report/" target="_blank">Freelance Industry Report </a>in which 1,204 freelancers worldwide representing 37 professions participated in August 2011. Translators represented 9% of respondents, or roughly 108 people.</p>
<p>One could say such a small sampling is not representative of the highly pixelized translation profession (disclosure: I did not take the survey). Nevertheless, a closer look at some of the data Ed Gandia collected does suggest much of the information is probably pretty accurate.</p>
<p><strong>To wit:</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Translators are also heavily concentrated (26%) in the $30-39/per hour category&#8221; (p.23), but beat other professions hands down in billing on average 80% of their work hours each week. Though the number of years of experience influences average hourly rates earned, the chart on p. 24 shows a fairly even distribution up to the $100-150/per hour range, where freelancers with 10+ years of experience dominate.</p>

<h3>Billing 80% of your working hours</h3>
<p>Sounds great unless:</p>
<ul>
<li>It means focusing on quantity rather than quality</li>
<li>It indicates a pattern of working predominantly against the clock <em></em></li>
<li>It leaves no time to promote your business and develop a solid <strong>marketing backlog</strong></li>
</ul>
<h3>Spending less than 2 hours a month on marketing</h3>
<p>If you can barely <strong>spare</strong> <strong>9 minutes a day</strong> (2 hours/22 working days) to promote your expertise, your work and your business, your dependence on those who currently provide the bulk of your work is <em>dangerous.</em></p>
<p>If you can only <strong>invest 9 minutes a day</strong> on marketing, then it should be no surprise raising your rates and landing better projects are a huge hurdle (complaining about lousy translation rates is a recurring &#8211; and oft sterile &#8211; theme on-line).</p>
<p>If you can only<strong> invest 9 minutes a day</strong>, it means you&#8217;re are not driving your business, <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em>it&#8217;s driving you</em>.</span> And isn&#8217;t greater independence one of the main reasons one chooses to be a freelance professional?</p>
<h3>11.2% of translators surveyed invest 16 hours or more on marketing</h3>
<p>And about 4% (an estimate looking at the chart on p.23) of translators surveyed earn between $100-200 per hour.<em> Is there a direct corrolation?</em></p>
<p>I believe so. Contrast with copywriters, about 25% of whom bill over $100 per hour and 26% of whom spend 16 hours and up per month on promoting their services.</p>
<h3>One a day</h3>
<p>&#8220;One apple a day keeps the doctor away.&#8221;</p>
<p>Walking one mile a day keeps you fit.</p>
